古英語 weorþ「価値ある・値する」に由来する形容詞・名詞。ゲルマン祖語 *werþaz（価値ある）にさかのぼる。同根に worthy（立派な）・worship（＜worth＋-ship「価値ある状態」＝崇拝）があり、いずれも「値打ち・尊さ」という核を共有する。現代英語では be worth ~ の形で前置詞のように振る舞い、後ろに名詞・金額・動名詞を直接とる特殊な語になっている。
