🏛 語源・歴史
古英語 weorold / woruld に由来。これは wer（人＝ラテン語 vir「男」と同根）＋ ald（年齢・時代←old）からなり、原義は「人の時代・人の一生」。そこから「人の住む場所＝この世」「世間」「世界」へと意味が広がった。つまり world はもともと地理的な「地球」ではなく、人間の営みの世界を指す語だった。werewolf（狼男）の wer- や virile（男らしい）と遠縁。
