🏛 語源・歴史
古英語 hwæþer（二つのうちのどちら）に由来する。what・which と同じ疑問語幹に、二者を比べる比較級語尾 -ther（either・other にも見られる）が付いた形。「二つのうちどちらか＝〜かどうか」が原義で、本来は「二択」を表した。同音の weather（天気）は別語源（古英語 weder）。
