🌱 語源
語源は古英語 tūn「囲い地・垣で囲った地所・農場」。もともとは家のまわりを柵や生け垣で囲った土地を指し、そこに人が集まって暮らすうちに「集落→町」へと意味が大きくなった。この tūn は地名の語尾 -ton(Brighton, Boston, Washington など)としても無数に残っており、ドイツ語 Zaun(垣)とも同源。大きさでいうと、village(village=村)< town(町)< city(city=市・都市)で、town はその中間(はっきりした境界はなく国・地域で異なる)。使い方の要点は、town が「自分の住む町・町の中心部」を漠然と指すとき冠詞をつけずに使うこと——go to town(町(中心部)へ出る/比喩で「派手にやる・張り込む」)、in town(町に来ている)、out of town(町を離れて・出張で)、downtown(downtown=中心街;副詞では go downtown=中心街へ/to は不要)。複合語に hometown(hometown=故郷の町)、town hall(町役場・公会堂)。特定の町を指すなら the town of 〜。関連語に city(市)、village(村)、country(country=(town と対で)いなか)。「囲い地→集落・町」が town の核。
