古フランス語 despit「侮辱・恨み・反抗」を経て、ラテン語 despectus「見下すこと・軽蔑」（動詞 despicere「見下す・軽蔑する」＝ de-「下を」＋ specere「見る」）に由来する。★もともと despite は名詞で「侮辱・軽蔑・恨み・反抗」を意味し、in despite of「〜を軽んじて・〜をものともせず」という句から、前置詞の despite「〜にもかかわらず」が生まれた（in と of が脱落して一語の前置詞になった経緯から、★現在 despite of とするのは誤り）。語根 specere「見る」は spite（悪意＝despite の短縮形）、despise（軽蔑する）、spectacle（光景）、inspect（検査する）、respect（尊敬する）、suspect（疑う）、spectator（観客）と共有する。【前置詞】〜にもかかわらず・〜をものともせず・〜であっても（あとに名詞・代名詞・動名詞がきて、前半とは逆接・予想に反する結果を導く）（despite the rain / the difficulties / the cost / his efforts / her illness＝雨・困難・費用・彼の努力・彼女の病気にもかかわらず（Despite the rain, we went out＝雨にもかかわらず外出した）、despite being tired / having little money＝疲れていた・お金がほとんどなかったにもかかわらず〔動名詞〕、despite the fact that 主語＋動詞＝〜という事実にもかかわらず（despite the fact that he was ill）、despite everything / all this＝何があっても・それでもなお、despite oneself＝思わず・我知らず・心ならずも（She laughed despite herself＝思わず笑ってしまった））。★in spite of（of が必要な3語の前置詞句)とほぼ同義で交換可能だが、despite は一語の前置詞なので of をつけない（despite the rain ○／despite of the rain ×）。ややかたい・改まった響きで、文章でよく使われる。節（主語＋動詞)を直接続けることはできず、その場合は although / even though（接続詞)を使う。古語・文語では名詞「侮辱・恨み」の用法も残る（in despite of＝〜を物ともせず）。近い語に in spite of（〜にもかかわらず）、regardless of（〜に関係なく）、notwithstanding（〜にもかかわらず〔かたい〕）、for all（〜にもかかわらず）、接続詞で although / though / even though（〜だけれども）、while（〜ではあるが）、反対の関係に because of / owing to / due to（〜のために＝原因）。同語源：spite（悪意。out of spite＝意地悪で、in spite of）、despise（軽蔑する）、spiteful（意地の悪い）。
