🏛 語源・歴史
古フランス語 catel（財産・所有物。後期ラテン語 capitale「財産」＝caput「頭」から）に由来する。英語の capital（資本・元手）、chattel（動産）とも同語源で、もとは「財産・資産」全般を意味した。昔は牛などの家畜が財産そのものだったため、cattle がしだいに「家畜＝牛」を指すようになった（capital が「頭数で数える財産」だったのと同じ発想）。今は「牛（の群れ）」を表し、いつも複数扱い（The cattle are ...）。a cattle や cattles とは言わず、1頭は a cow（雌）/ a bull（雄）、頭数は head で数える（ten head of cattle）。raise cattle（牛を飼育する）、a herd of cattle（牛の群れ）。家畜全般は livestock。
