英検は、日本最大の英語資格試験であり、2022年度には約420万人が受験しています。
そしてリーディング・リスニング・ライティング・スピーキングの4技能が測定できる試験として、日本の英語教育に重要な役割を果たしています。
文部科学省（以下文科省）は第2期教育振興基本計画において、中学生に英検3級相当の英語力、高校生で準2級～2級相当の英語力保有率が50%を超える目標を掲げています。
英検を取得すると多くの大学で有利に扱われることもあり、年々さらに受験者は増えています。
今後もますます重要な試験としての存在となることが予想されている。
